A brief history of the Pembury League of Friends

It was founded in 1954

Founder Members included:

  • Philip Stuart Browning - Hospital Chaplain
  • Miss Edith Hughes - Headmistress TWGGS
  • Mr & Mrs Garret - Hospital Administrator
  • Dr Greasby - Surgeon
  • Miss Fagelman - Matron
  • Rex Turner - Pembury Parish Organist


The original aims were to carry out voluntary work and to raise funds to provide additional comforts and amenities for patients and staff.

The League Shop was opened in 1974 by Nancy Hill

The League in 2005

Our President is The Viscountess De L'Isle of Penshurst Place.

The Council consists of 32 members all giving their time and energy voluntarily to further the aims of the League.

The Chairman of Council is Gary Purdy. Find out more about him and other members of the council here.

Current aims and activities

  • All funds raised go to the benefit of hospital projects
  • Average sums raised per annum over the last five years amount to £50,000
  • The main fund raising event in 2004 was a summer ball which raised £2,500
  • The ethos of the league is to change with the changing needs of the hospital and to assist in meeting priorities which might otherwise not be fulfilled.
